Our Journey
The Dr. Nayana and Indrajit Vyas Memory Care and Wellness Foundation was created from firsthand experience with serious illness, long term caregiving, and the profound gaps that families often face when navigating complex medical and neurological conditions.
In 2009, Dr. Vyas’s husband, Indrajit, who goes by Andy, was diagnosed with a rare skull base tumor known as a chordoma. Although surgery and advanced radiation treatment successfully addressed the cancer, the effects of treatment resulted in neurological injury that led to dementia and long-term cognitive challenges. What followed was not only a medical journey, but an enduring caregiving journey that required constant advocacy, coordination, and adaptation.
Despite her extensive medical training and professional experience, Dr. Vyas quickly discovered that expertise alone does not shield families from the realities of long-term caregiving. She encountered the same obstacles faced by countless caregivers. Fragmented care systems, complex decision making, emotional strain, and the daily challenges of managing behavioral changes, safety, routines, and legal and financial responsibilities. The experience underscored how difficult it can be for even the most knowledgeable individuals to navigate these demands without meaningful guidance and support.
Over many years, Dr. Vyas became deeply immersed in the lived realities of patients and caregivers alike. Through commitment, structure, and sustained engagement, she learned that informed caregiving, early intervention, and practical resources can significantly influence quality of life and long-term outcomes. This journey reinforced the importance of compassionate, accessible support for families at every stage of illness.
The Nayana Vyas MD Wellness Foundation exists to support individuals and families confronting similar challenges. The Foundation is dedicated to education, awareness, and practical support for caregivers and patients dealing with complex neurological conditions, dementia, and long-term illness. By sharing knowledge, fostering understanding, and promoting proactive care strategies, the Foundation seeks to improve quality of life and empower families to navigate these journeys with greater confidence and compassion.
